Questions & Answers

  • How many NAICS codes can a company have?

An establishment may only have one (1) Primary NAICS code, which is determined by the industry that generates the highest revenue or value of shipments. An establishment that operates in more than one (1) activity may have additional Secondary NAICS Codes.

  • How do I apply for a NAICS Code?

Statistical agencies generally assign NAICS codes based on information provided by a business on a survey, application form, report, or other method.

  • I need a NAICS Code for my business.
    How do I get it?

Use the NAICS code lookup function on this page and enter a keyword that describes your type of business. A list of primary business activities containing that keyword and the corresponding NAICS Codes will appear. Choose the NAICS code that most closely corresponds to your primary business activity or refine your search accordingly.

It is important that when you identify your NAICS code, that you double check that you have selected a code that represents the correct Industry Sector. For example, if your business is a shoe manufacturer, do not select a shoe retailer NAICS Code even though that may have appeared as a search result.

  • Who assigns NAICS codes to businesses?

This varies by government agency, as they each have their own method for assigning NAICS codes to the establishments on their lists. For example, the Social Security Administration assigns a NAICS code to new businesses based on information provided on their application for an EIN number. The Census Bureau generally assigns NAICS codes to businesses based on survey data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics initially assigns a NAICS code based on the business activity information provided on an application for unemployment insurance.
